A Message from Our Headteacher

As the proud Headteacher of this amazing school I am delighted to share with you through this website some of the things that make our school so special. We are a highly ambitious school determined to produce the highest quality education for every student. We have an amazing, talented and dedicated team of staff providing the richest opportunites both within the classroom and beyond.

New Learning Spaces

We have recently moved into our brand new state-of-the-art building following the completion of the Building Schools for the Future initiative. We are very excited about our new learning spaces and the use of new technologies that will further enhance our outstanding team of teachers. The plans to extend the community provision are new and exciting. We aim to make our school facilities available at every opportunity to ensure the school becomes the heart of Wednesfield. Ofsted Inspection feedback

The headteacher has established a harmonious environment where staff and students feel valued. Students say that they feel safe and well cared for. Students enjoy their learning and are keen to do well because constant encouragement from adults generates increased self-confidence, rising aspirations and positive attitudes to learning. In the best lessons, teachers make learning fun by introducing an element of challenge and competition. Teachers provide opportunities for students to work collaboratively, developing their teamwork and leadership skills. The courses that students follow are flexible to meet their individual needs, and the school’s engineering specialism is a particular strength. A-level passes have risen over the last three years, there was a 100% pass rate and work-related courses are a notable strength. In 2013 all students taking engineering courses at A level and as a work-related course were successful. This led in many cases to apprenticeships or further study. Sixth form students take an active role in the school, providing support for younger students and organising activities. They are encouraged to undertake roles as ambassadors for the school, developing leadership and teamwork skills. Students express pride in the inspirational new building and their gratitude for the wealth of facilities. Behaviour in corridors and in the dining hall is calm and well ordered. Students told inspectors that the school keeps them safe, that bullying is rare and that the school will not tolerate racism or other discrimination. The school works hard to promote the importance of good attendance and provides a wealth of support to families facing challenging circumstances to improve attendance.

Our Mission Statement

We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all our students from 11 – 18 to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. The revised National Curriculum sets the framework for us to use.

In Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9) all students study each curriculum subject with specialist staff. Our curriculum allows students the opportunity to study a wide range of individual subjects.

We have an exciting and innovative approach to our Lesson 7 where all students will participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities across the week. There is a bespoke programme of activities for each year group. The programme is designed to enrich and extend the students’ academic curriculum, develop personal and social skills and provide an opportunity for supervised study.

In Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and 11) an element of choice is introduced into our examination courses. We will ensure that breadth and balance are maintained as well as giving all students an opportunity to gain high quality qualifications. All students study English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Citizenship and Physical Education. Students then choose from a selection of subjects ranging from Art, Music, Drama, History, Geography, a Modern Foreign Language, Business Studies, Psychology, Sociology and a range of vocational subjects including Engineering, Health and Social Care, Media Studies, Travel and Tourism, and Child Studies. Careful careers guidance and individual discussions assist in the choice of such options for examination level.

The Post 16 curriculum provides students with an opportunity to specialise in a smaller number of subjects. Again, we ensure that students are able to follow an academically demanding programme of AS and A level subjects if that is appropriate for them as well as offering exciting opportunities to follow a more vocational route in preparation for Higher Education or employment.

Our Staff

Students are encouraged and supported to become effective learners and make the most of their time at the school. We have an amazing team of staff who constantly strive to provide the best for all students. They are stunning and reflect our values to go the extra mile for every child. They contribute significantly to the high quality teaching and learning that our students enjoy. We support all staff to ensure they provide the best lessons with the best resources and achieve the best outcomes. Our support staff team all work closely with teaching staff in order to ensure that our students are encouraged to work to their potential and realise their aspirations. Our team of administration, specialist technician and site management staff ensure our school and its resources are very efficiently managed.

New Technologies

We endeavour to develop a school of uploaders not downloaders. We want our students to contribute to the world wide web and not just take from it. Our students develop skills using a wide range of hardware and software. From desktop PCs and Apple iMacs to netbooks and Macbooks. Our students produce great work with iPads in lessons on a daily basis with all subject zones having class sets to use. This all contributes to students researching and presenting their learning in new and exciting ways. Our work has been recognised not just at a local level but also internationally. Multimedia teaching and learning is central to what we do everyday here at Wednesfield High School.
