At Sandown Bay Academy we always put our students first. We are building an academy that supports, guides and develops them during the exciting phase from childhood to becoming a young adult. Sandown Bay is set amongst wonderful surroundings and we make the most of our environment and space to create opportunities for every student to thrive and experience success.
Our mission is to “make our best better.” As an academy we are constantly seeking ways to improve and do better for our students. For the youngsters, this represents meeting their own personal challenge. We want them to be bold in describing their ambitions in life and then we work with them in order to make what initially may be a dream into a reality. The older they become, the more confidence they must have in themselves.
We understand the ingredients of success; we have a strong curriculum that is closely matched to the needs of all of our students. It supports academic excellence and promotes outstanding achievement in Sport and PE, Performing Arts and a range of subjects that prepare our students for work. There is a strong tradition of academic excellence with many sixth form students progressing to top universities.
We recognise the need to support and encourage our students and we have an excellent pastoral system, at the heart of which are our excellent form tutors. We also have a House system that provides fun, challenge and competition and from this comes our student leadership. Students themselves play a strong part in developing their school through the School Council and older students meet regularly with me in order to discuss how we can make our academy better.
We always try to work hard with parents in order that they can help their children to be successful. We need a partnership where every student comes to school every day, equipped and fully prepared to work. We have high expectations and expect to be supported by parents in getting the basics right in areas such as behaviour and uniform. Where students find school difficult, we will work exceptionally hard to provide the support, through which they will also enjoy success and we have a dedicated team of very skilled staff to do this.
As our students grow, they thrive. They thrive through taking advantage of the many opportunities on offer; these range from participation in teams, the development of excellence in an individual sport, involvement in our talent programmes in Performing Arts, our leadership programmes and Duke of Edinburgh right up to the Medrox programme that prepares students for the best universities. The list is endless; I doubt if many schools in the country can match the opportunities available at Sandown Bay Academy.
