Birkbeck is a world-class research and teaching institution, a vibrant centre of academic excellence and London’s only specialist provider of evening higher education. We encourage applications from students without traditional qualifications and we have a wide range of programmes to suit every entry level. Our academic reputation also attracts many traditional full-time postgraduate students.
Over 19,000 students study with us every year. They join a community that is as diverse and cosmopolitan as London’s population.
World-class research environment
Over 90 per cent of Birkbeck academics are research-active – the highest rate for any multi-faculty institution in London and the fifth highest in the UK.
In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, more than 80 per cent of the research was rated as being of international importance. Twelve of our Schools received the maximum ‘best 5*’ or 5 ranking.
In 2006, Birkbeck was awarded a prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for excellence in higher education research.
In addition, we beat such prestigious universities as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and University College London (UCL) to become the top higher education institution in a league table of research funding success.
